A Classroom Planned For Learning
Below is a list of learning centers included in all of the classrooms at Willie Price University Nursery School.
These centers allow the children to make choices, move freely and independently, accept responsibility, learn to cooperate and communicate with others, control their own behavior, and learn through first-hand experiences. In doing so, the child develops a positive attitude about himself and his school, is more motivated to achieve, and accepts responsibility for his actions. The following list gives some benefits of learning centers.
Art Center
- Develops creativity and imagination.
- Develops small and large muscle skills
- Learns about colors
- Provides for release of positive and negative feelings
- Increases sense awareness
- Develops reading readiness skills
- Discovers creative ways to use art media
- Develops pre-writing skills
Housekeeping Center
- Gives opportunity to role play home experiences
- Increases social development and communication skill
- Develops small and large muscle coordination
- Learns facts about himself and his environment
Block Building Center
- Learns to work cooperatively
- Develops gross and fine motor skills
- Learns mathematical concepts (shape, size, balance, counting)
- Increases creativity and decision-making skills
- Enhances social studies development
- Respect rights of others
Science Center
- Learns to be inquisitive and find answers through experimentation
- Learns factual information through first-hand experiences
(Physics, chemistry, biology, geology, astronomy, etc.)
- Develops sense awareness
- Develops respect for their environment
- Provides opportunities for care of plants and animals
Library Center
- Learns to appreciate Literature
- Learns to respect and take care of books
- Strengthens visual perception

Math and Manipulative Centers
