The concept of Southern hospitality is well-known — warm smiling faces, genteel manners, a quick, easy laugh, and a smooth drawl. The American South is a fabled, evocative land of warmth and generosity, so it is no small designation that, in a region recognized for its kindness to strangers, Mississippi is known as the “Hospitality State.”
The University of Mississippi, also affectionately known as “Ole Miss,” is located in the heart of the American South, in the north-central region of Mississippi, in a town called Oxford. Oxford is not a typical small American town. It combines the charm and safety of a small Southern town with the multiculturalism and energy of a larger city. Oxford is also included The Best 100 Small Towns in America and is featured in the new book Most Beautiful Cities in the South.
Oxford’s location in the heart of the southeastern United States makes it the perfect point from which to explore the rich and diverse culture of the American South, including cities like Memphis TN; Atlanta, GA; Birmingham, AL; and New Orleans, LA.
