Book Arts Class - This course is closed.

Books and Cards! Get ready for the holiday gift giving early! Learn how to make several types of bound books and Pop-Up cards. Everyone loves hand made cards that you have put your heart into making. A personal memory book would be perfect for almost anyone in the family. Like an old fashioned quilting bee, making books is a social affair, so come join the fun and learn to make book bindings like the pamphlet binding, concertina, and post and screw.

Chain Making

In this class, participants will be making a byzantine bracelet. It will be made from argentium sterling silver. The class will meet from 9:00 a.m. – until 3:00 p.m. with a break for lunch at 12:00 p.m. Tools will be furnished or participants can bring their own. Participants will use two sets of pliers, either two that they are comfortable with out of the bent nose, chain nose, or flat nose pliers. Class size is limited to 10 people.

Fall Watercolor Class - This course is closed.

The class will include demonstrations of techniques, lectures and projects. The watercolor techniques taught include wet on dry, dry in wet and wet on wet, and styles will include abstract and still life compositions.

  • Watercolor paint in tubes: brands may range in price as do grades of those brands, for instance, “professional” or “artist quality” colors will be more expensive than the student grades, Cotman and Academy are student grades. If you have old paint that has dried up in tubes, don’t throw it away, it can be used. Suggested Colors: NO black or white, alizarin crimson, carmine, vermilion red, viridian, prussian blue, manganese blue, indigo, van dyke brown, sepia, hookers green dark, hookers green light, sap green, yellow ochre, cadmium yellow, cadmium red, cadmium orange, ultramarine blue, all Windsor colors, Antwerp blue, burnt sienna, burnt umber, raw sienna, raw umber, turquoise, rose madder, purple lake, lemon yellow and more.

The Woodshop Demystified - Woodworking 101 - This course is closed.

This class is designed for beginners! Ladies and gentlemen, be prepared to make Thursday night your favorite night of the week when you sign up for this class! It is a hands-on exploration of basic woodworking in a real shop! Machine safety and function, basic wood finishing, joinery techniques, and characteristics of wood will be discussed, demonstrated, and utilized as students build several small projects. This class is limited to 10 participants.

Japanese Business Communication and Culture Class

Those interested in exploring Japanese language and culture will find this course to be an easy and enjoyable way for beginners to learn about greetings, writing systems, useful vocabulary and culture. The class will focus on developing basic communicative skills in business contexts and on understanding Japanese customs, manners and structures. Various aspects of culture, such as Japanese calligraphy, tea, foods, and education system will be also introduced.

Personal Protection for Women Workshop

Personal Protection is more than being able to use your fists. It is recognizing and avoiding danger before something bad happens: on the street, on a date, in the home, while driving, shopping, and traveling, at school, at work, and so much more. Simple self-defense techniques, that really work, will be taught. Get your “What If?” questions answered. No experience or fitness level required. Don’t wait until it’s too late!

Beginning Belly Dancing - This course is full.

Once found only in the Middle East & Africa, belly dance has now gone global. An ancient social dance form passed from generation to generation, it is a great way to tone muscles, lose weight, build self-esteem and make new friends. In this class, we will cover the basic steps, isolations, body waves, shimmies, and time permitting, some veil technique. The class is limited to 20 participants.

Rhythm Dance

NEW COURSE OPENING!

In this six week course, we will cover four major rhythm dances. Two will be American rhythms and two will be Latin. The American dances will be East Coast Swing and West Coast Swing. Our Latin dances will be Mambo and Bolero. We will teach this class at a social level. Beginners are welcome; no partner necessary. Our goal for this class is to get the entire class comfortable enough with these four dances to use them socially.

Scott Bell and Abigail Broome are trained in both American smooth and rhythm ballroom dance. Scott was recruited from Waukesha, Wisconsin to be an instructor at the Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Memphis. His teaching qualifications include a Full Advanced Social Bronze certification and diploma, as well as an Intermediate Advanced Social Silver certificate. Abigail began working at that same studio after graduating from Ole Miss is May 2007. She received her Bronze Elements diploma and a Full Bronze certificate from the Fred Astaire franchise. Scott and Abigail are currently living in Memphis. They have been dancing together professionally for over a year. Together they have done a number of professional performances and exhibitions and are currently training for upcoming competitions.


Social Dancing Classes

Beginner: Come learn the fundamentals of ballroom dancing! This class is great for people with little to no experience in ballroom dancing. The class will cover the basic patterns in the Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Cha Cha, Rumba, and Swing.

Intermediate: This course builds on the fundamentals of the six major dances of Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Cha Cha, Rumba, and Swing. More complex patterns along with basic technique of lead and follow will be introduced. This course is developed for the dancer who already has some working knowledge of ballroom dancing.

Advanced: This course focuses on the complexity and intricacy of advanced patterns in the six major dances in addition to the Quickstep and Viennese Waltz. This course is designed for the dancer who has at least two years of experienced ballroom dancing and wants to further develop his or her skill.

Reading & Presenting (R.A.P.) Stories to Young Children - This course is closed.

The overall purpose of this workshop is to instruct educators to use techniques and activities that will enhance reading aloud and strengthen comprehension in their students. Through a mixture of songs and activities, educators are introduced to various types of read alouds, different styles of presentation, and best practices for building comprehension. Participants of the workshop will identify various types of stories, select books during the workshop and prepare a ready reference annotation of book titles. Participants will also examine different methods for presentations. Participants will be able to receive CEUS for an additional fee of $20.00.

Asian Cuisine Cooking - This course is closed.

Have you ever watched “Food Network” on television and aspired to cook like those chefs? Participants will learn four different original dishes originating from four different Asian countries. At the end of the cooking class, participants will know how to prepare, cook, and serve Singapore Fried Rice Noodles, Hong Kong pot stickers, Malaysia Curry Chicken, and Japanese Sushi.

The fee includes all ingredients needed for the meal and also printed recipes. Enrollment is limited to 10 people and will be taken on a first come first serve basis.

Cake Decorating - This course is closed.

A basic class, Cake Decorating does not require any prior experience. This hands-on class allows participants to experiment and practice their cake-decorating skills under the direction of an expert. A supply list will be distributed in advance of the class. A supply list is available upon registration. The class is aught by Anita Cook, who has been decorating cakes for 26 years. She was trained in cake and candy decorating at Calico Cake Shop in Los Angeles. A supply list will be emailed to registrants.

Chinese Cuisine Cooking - This course is closed.

Impress your friends and family! Learn authentic Chinese cuisine from a native Chinese! This is a fun, hands on experience that you will treasure for life. Participants will learn four different, popular restaurant dishes that you will be able to cook in their homes. At the end of this cooking class, participants will know how to prepare, cook, and serve Fried Rice, Egg rolls, Fried Wontons, and Moo Goo Gai Pan.

Cooking Yocona Inn Style with Paige Osborn

Paige Osborn, owner and executive chef of Yocona River Inn, is a native of New Orleans. She is a graduate of Tulane University. After several years of cooking in restaurants in New Orleans, Paige moved to Oxford in 1991 to pursue a graduate degree in Southern Studies at the University of Mississippi. Her return to the academic world was short lived, however, and after one semester she returned to the world of food, working in various Oxford restaurants before taking over Yocona River Inn in 1995. Paige and her son Tommy live next to the restaurant and call Yocona home.

The fee for “Cooking Yocona Inn Style” is $85.00 for each session. A payroll deduction is available for University faculty and staff. All classes will be held at The Depot.

Kids Personal Protection Workshop (Ages 7-12)

The Kids Personal Protection Workshop will focus on basic and simple things children can do to protect themselves from strangers, dangerous adults, school yard bullies, abduction, and more. A parent or authorized guardian must be present during the workshop, so they, too, can learn these skills and reinforce them with their children. This workshop offers real value and usable skills for its dollar and time requirements. Children can, and do, use these proven skills. Class size will be limited to 16 children.

Mac OS X (For New to Experienced Users) - This course is closed.

Targeted at Mac users of all expertise levels, this course will cover introduction to basics of the Mac desktop through to editing video and twittering. Special emphasis will be paid to the “big three” (email, web, and photos), Windows to Mac switchers, installing software, and introduction to how to effectively use timesaving features like Exposé, Dashboard, keyboard shortcuts, etc. By the end of the class participants should know what all of the pre-installed applications do and how to use most of them. The course will incorporate interactive lecture as well as open question/discussion. Folks with MacBooks are encouraged to bring them as many techniques are best learned on your own computer. Those who do not have portables, or don’t yet own a Mac will be able to use computers in the lab setting.
